How did Eddie Tipton scam the Colorado Lottery?
Eddie Tipton, former security director of the Association of US Multi-State Lottery, was in charge of installing software for the lottery machines. He earned millions by making several correct predictions of winning numbers. The fun ended for him when he was arrested in 2015 for rigging the $16.5 million jackpot in Iowa. But new investigations unveiled new evidence and he is on trial for another five fixed gains through Colorado, Wisconsin, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
Authorities identified Eddie Tipton in the surveillance videos that showed him buying the $16.5 million winning ticket at a gas station in 2010. His younger brother, Tommy, also benefited from Eddie's hack, earning him a total $1.2 million from lotteries across Colorado and Oklahoma.
The six jackpots range from 2005 through 2011. Authorities tested the hacking software Tipton had developed and it indeed allowed them to recreate prints and "win" with certain numbers.
On June 29, 2017, Eddie Tipton pleaded guilty to all charges regarding the hacking software that helped him manipulate the winning numbers to benefit himself, his brother, and others.
