Richard Rosario 20 years in jail and innocent

Imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, Richard Rosario was freed 13 alibis and 20 years later. Rosario was charged with the murder of a teenager in 1996. Though he had 13 witnesses to testify to the fact that he was in Florida, he was convicted.

At the time of the murder, Richard Rosario states that he was 1000 miles away in Florida and among the 13 witnesses who vouched for him were a pastor, a sheriff, and a federal correctional officer. Rosario turned himself in when he heard that the police were looking for him and was very co-operative with all the information that they required. Despite all these circumstances, he was convicted for a crime he did not commit. He claims that the detectives in charge of the case did not investigate adequately.

Rosario has stuck to his story over the last 20 years. He says that he boarded a bus to New York City with the intention of clearing up what he thought was a misunderstanding. While he was there, officers came looking for him at his apartment in the Bronx. He later turned himself in stating that he was willing to clear up any questions that the detectives may have. At the station two eye witnesses picked his photo from a book of mug shots and then from a line up.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark vowed to focus on wrongful convictions when she took office this year. When Rosario’s case was brought before her, she determined that it was a case of wrongful conviction and that Richard Rosario be released.

Richard Rosario wants the charges to remain open so he can clear his name and prove that he was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit.
